The fifth tournament of the 2005 CBC circuit was our annual two day outing
at Lake Cachuma. Some of the guys had reported a decent bite in pre fish
yet others had reported very tough conditions. Much of this was forgotten
temporarily on Friday night as much of the club was busy preparing a variety
of great dishes on the BBQ grill.
The next morning 9 teams launched into the fog at 6am and relied heavily on
GPS to figure out where in the heck we were going. One team that was not
in a fog was Mike Carpenter and Ron Licari who found that although the
fishing was tough, at least 9 keepers were willing to bite over the course of
the two days. Their winning total was 16.40 lbs. Great job guys!
Finishing in second place was Mike Lander and the Editor with a five fish two
day total of 8.98lbs. Mike had pre fished and knew where to head first thing,
as we plied the walls between Cachuma Bay and Johnson Bay with a variety
of baits. This gave us two early fish, one on Texas Rig, the other on a
fluke. Then, for the last couple of hours of both fishing days, we gutted it out
on Jackrabbit Flats. Mike was able to hook up with the drop shot there,
which included the event big fish, a largemouth weighing 2.89lbs. Mike was
a pleasure to fish with, has a great boat, and is an extremely patient
fisherman. Thanks for letting me come along Mike, I wish I could have
helped a little more!
Rounding out the top three were Doug Engh and Mark O’Borsky with four
fish totaling 8.63lbs. Doug commented that he was heartbroken by missing
the same 3lb bed fish two days in
a row. Still, their high finish raised them in the overall standings and once
again established Doug as one of the people to beat in the club this year.
The highlight of the trip was probably the awesome tri tip cookout staged by
the club on Saturday night. There was plenty of great food to go around,
along with some great camaraderie at the campfire that evening. A big
thanks to everyone who brought supplies to make the evening a success,
including J.D., Ron L., Mike Stern, Ralph, Rex, Jeff, Mark Poulson, and Mike
Lander.
All in all it was once again a great weekend. The bite was incredibly tough
and had many club members bewildered. That, along with an apparently
high pollen count had several members competing to see who had the worst
allergies, and I think Jeff Jue may have won that contest! I had a great time
for sure and hope to do it again next year, with hopefully some better fishing
next time around!
Last meeting
A huge thanks to the speaker at our last meeting, local pro Richard Smith.
Smitty gave a great talk on how to tackle lakes that you have never fished
before.
Next meeting
You won’t want to miss the next meeting as the scheduled guest speaker is
the always entertaining Carol Martens.
Another very important topic will be our upcoming challenge tournament on
June 12th. As usual we will be holding our $5 all you can eat tri tip BBQ the
night before starting at 5PM at the west ramp next to the lifeguard tower. We
certainly hope everyone will attend and of course family members are invited
to attend as well. The West Ramp parking lot will be reserved for those
members wishing to stay the night. We will gather the next morning at 4am
to start sign-ups and partner pairings. You will be paired with a member of
another club for a great day of fishing. We will be staging a live weigh in this
year and the limit will be four fish per person. Once again a big fish option
will be offered. After the tournament a free BBQ will be offered and then a
huge raffle will be held. The top four weights from each club will be totaled to
determine the winning club. Remember, at the last meeting it was decided
that this would be a non-points event for our club, in order to promote more
sharing amongst our own members, so we can make sure that we retain the
Sun Country Marine Trophy for another year. So, we will have a part of our
next meeting dedicated to this sharing, and I certainly hope and expect that
some club members will share what they have been having success on lately
at Castaic! After all, that is the whole reason the event is non-points, so
everyone will be more willing to share with fellow club members!
Friends of Castaic Lake Float Tube Derby and Bassing for
Abused Kids
A huge thanks to all of those members who helped out with both events. Our
very own J.D. earned a third place in the float tube event!
FOCL night tournaments
Another huge thanks to all of those who pitched in to help at the last Castaic
night tournament. It was great seeing so many people pitch in and your next
chance to help again will be Friday night, June 10th. There were 88 teams
at the last event and we expect more this time so we’ll be busy grilling those
burgers!
