Castaic Lake Main Ramp
Members of five different clubs converged on the West Ramp for the 13th annual Castaic
Bass Club challenge tournament. The format was different this year as members of clubs
fished with members from their own club in an attempt to get their names engraved on the
Sun Country Marine Cup. Clubs in attendance included Antelope Valley, Ventura County,
South Orange County, 911 and the host Castaic Bass Club. Things got off to a start the
night before with an all you can eat tri tip BBQ. This was especially enjoyed by SOCB
members Gerry Mahieu and Brian Day, and we all watched as fire helicopters flew overhead
in pursuit of the persistent Day Fire. The next morning everyone gathered at the ramp, paid
their option money, and blasted off in search of the winning pattern. It quickly became
apparent that it would be difficult wading through all the stripers!
In addition to catching a huge striper, Michael Stern of CBC caught a nice largemouth of 6.21
lbs, the big fish of the event. I think he may have caught in on light line, as his partner, Mike
Gioia, started yawning as he waited to net the striper! Too bad he couldn’t count that one!
Weigh in was 1PM, and the after tournament schedule included another BBQ along with a
raffle. Checks were given out for the top three big fish along with top three total weight.
Great Job to Gerry Mahieu and Kirk Rossi for getting the largest sack of 14.33lbs! They also
had the 2nd big fish of 4.27lbs!
Taking second for total weight were Brendon O’Dell and Bo Viesces of CBC with 11.37lbs,
and taking third were Jeff Jue and Marcia Thompson of CBC with 10.51lbs. These nice sacks
helped CBC retain the trophy with the overall top weight for their top three teams! Finishing
a close second was SOCB, these guys have some great fisherman and guys like Gerry are
threats to win no matter what lake they are on.
I want to thank our great sponsors for this event, including Val White at Action Fishing
Tackle, Steve
Gallion of Gallion’s Corner Market, Amir at Lakeside Marine, Grant Powell of Sun Country
Marine, and Team Liftoff. These were the great folks who supplied merchandise as well as
gift certificates for our after tournament raffle. A big thanks goes out to Larry Wild selling
the raffle tickets.
I want to thank our great cooking crew as well.. Karl sliced up the delicious tri tip, and Richard
and Linda Cook spent plenty of time cooking it. Thanks very much to Mike and Donna Iljin
for not only bringing out food but also for helping to s lice it and cook it. Thanks also to
Clyde Crow and Linda Bell for bringing out plenty of cold drinks. And thanks especially to Bo
Viescas for bringing out a ton of food and charcoal. Anything that was not accounted for was
brought out by Bo in several huge ice chests! Great job Bo!
This was by far the most organized challenge event so far, and kudos go out to Mike Iljin and
Michael
Stern for taking charge, along with Linda Bell for collecting option money. And great job to
Jake Viescas and Mark Poulson for running a fast and efficient weigh in. Thanks so much
to the fisherman, only one fish died this time, great job in keeping them alive! Folks, please
keep in mind next year’s event, scheduled for September 16th, 2007. We hope to see all of
you out there!
We certainly encourage all visiting clubs to make this an annual event (maybe including
some points might be the trick?).
On a personal note, I want to thanks those members of our own club who attended the pre
tournament BBQ, and especially those who fished the tournament. It seems that some
incentive goes away when there are no points available, and I really appreciated those who
came out to fish the event on our club’s behalf even though there were no points available.
Thanks guys!
A huge thanks to Scott Sweet of California Bass Federation for stopping by at our last
meeting to talk about the opportunities the Federation has to offer.
Please pay close attention to our website for a variety of reasons:
1. This November’s tournament has been switched from the 12th to the 19th, due to a
conflict with the Love Ride.
2. Next years schedule is up on the site, please check it out and mark your 2007 calendar
for all of our events!
3. Please check our sponsor page and support those who support us!
Our next tournament will be Lake Casitas on October 15th.
Speaking of the Love Ride, it is coming up on Sunday, November 12th at the Lower Lake.
We will need volunteers to man our beer booth, which is always a great fundraiser for our
club.
If you are interested in some great seminars from some great pro fisherman, you won’t want
to miss the Angler’s Marine Bass a thon in Anaheim November 4th-5th. Featured speakers
will include Kevin Van Dam, Denny Brauer, Brent Ehrler, Luke Clausen, Edwin Evers, and
Jimmy Reese. This is the same show where Poulson gets all his secret lures, so you won’t
want to miss this one!
Last but not least, the 911 Bass Club challenge is coming up on Saturday and Sunday,
October 21st and 22nd. This will take place at Castaic the first day and then Pyramid the
second day. There will be a $300 entry fee paid by the club, with five teams competing. Not
sure at this time how the teams will be selected, I suppose some priority may be given to
those who competed for our cause in our own challenge event, but this will be announced at
our next meeting. However, with several club members en route to Clear Lake that weekend
to compete in the Angler’s Choice TOC, many of our top anglers in the standings will
probably be included in the field as
