Club tries to thaw out at Castaic 14 teams converged at Castaic’s main ramp on a
day when the lakes weather station recorded a low temperature of 15 degrees! It
was the coldest tournament in club history and even brought back memories of
Nebraska for Karl and he spotted icicles in various spots throughout the lakeshore!

Fending off the cold were Jeff Jue and William Ruiz with a limit weighing 11.04 lbs
with a nice kicker of 3.29lbs. Great job guys, and rumor has it that Jeff, for some
reason, was not fishing in shorts at this event!

Taking second were Brendon O’Dell and Ernie Kost with a limit weighing 10.71 lbs,
with a nice 2.88 lb kicker. I bet Ernie was able to keep up his concentration due to
his recent retirement. Great job fellas!

Taking third were Mark Poulson and Brian Sasahara four fish totaling 9.62lbs. They
caught shallow Ika fish and deep drop shot fish. Great job gentlemen!

Finally, great job to Mike Lander for catching the event big fish!

Next meeting and tournament
The speaker at our next meeting will be noted pro Charlie Weyer.
Our next tournament will be at Casitas on February 11th with a non-boater fee of
$35.

Following article was submitted by club member Shelley Singer:

TEAM TIPS
In the hope of making us all better at the team concept I convinced Terry to start
another piece called TEAM TIPS. We can all contribute ideas that make working
together as a 2 person team (that never fished together before) a smoother and
more enjoyable experience. Here is one I learned from Jeff Jue. Take a few
minutes before the tournament to establish where the net will be. Also, where the
optimal spots on the boat to net fish are and where the worst spots are.

FROM THE BACKSEAT
I know that almost all of us get one or more bass fishing magazines. Have you ever
noticed that there is never an article about the co-angler, the person in the
backseat? I have and I have also noticed that we have to fish differently than the
person in the front. I am not complaining, I am just pointing out that we have
developed our own techniques that are more or less successful. I suggested a
regular column to Terry and I have given it the tentative name you see above. My
hope is to create a place where we can all share our experiences in the backseat
and maybe, just maybe improve our team numbers.

For me, I have found a kind of modified troll to work very well. As the boat is
moving forward on the trolling motor, it is not always easy to cast ahead and work
back. I, for one, am so totally right handed that when my teammate is on my right, I
can’t throw a baitcaster at all. At times like this I revert to the modified troll. I
usually use a dropshot rig and I try to stay in a zone between 8 and 12 feet from the
bank. Watch for stick-up, cast past them and work your bait back as close to the
stick-up as possible. Since the boat is moving forward, very little retrieve is
needed until the bait moves out of that
imaginary 8 to 12 foot zone.
Tackle Notes:
Pole: 6 foot Medium-Heavy Spin Cast
Line: Maxima 6# test
Hook: #4 bait holder tied not more than 12 inches above the sinker
Sinker: 3/8 oz. Bell Sinker (they are so cheap)
Bait: Robo Worm 4 inch – Favorite Color: Margarita Mutilator
.
U.S. Anglers Choice
Our very own club President Mike Iljin conducted his first event as tournament
director on January 29th. And the beat goes on, as Jeff won this event too-to the
tune of over $2000 in winnings! Check out the results on the AC website, you might
notice that team Kratzer did okay too...
