Cachuma Lake
12 teams (23 people) showed up at this beautiful Santa Barbara County lake for our
annual two day event. The weather was mild overall with very windy conditions
both afternoons. It was anticipated that a lot of fish would be caught, but keepers
could be in short supply.
The team of Ron Berry and Brian Sasahara seemed to be the team that found the
most quality with a two day total of 10 bass for 28.7lbs, led by Ron’s 6.95lb toad.
Jigs were the hot ticket for this team. Great job!
Finishing second were Jeff Jue and the editor with 10 fish totaling 26.59lbs, led by
Jeff’s event big fish of 7.77 lbs that decided a Huddleston trout bait was good
enough to eat. This was really an amazing experience to watch the skill that Jeff
used in bringing that huge fish to the net! We also caught fish with jigs, flukes,
senkos and drop shot. Thanks for the great weekend of fishing Jeff!
Finishing third were Brendon O’Dell and Shelley Singer with 10 fish totaling 19.76
lbs. The big fish on their boat weighed 3.1 lbs. Great job guys!
Also worthy of mention was the 6.3lb toad weighed in by David Eberle, and the 5.57
lb hawg weighed by Mike Iljin. Great job guys, looks like there a few big fish on the
prowl!
Most of members gathered Saturday evening in Barrona Butte campground for a
great BBQ dinner. Since I was half starved I decided to borrow Mark Poulson’s
(thanks Mark!) grate from his webber grill and slapped it on top of the huge fire pit,
loaded up on charcoal, and then set em’ on fire. About an hour later everyone
feasted on chicken, sausage, beans, potato salad, and bread. I have to thank Larry
for the can opener and hot dog buns, and Linda for BBQ glove and other utensils,
otherwise the beans would have been a bit hard to scoop from the pan! And Linda,
thanks again for letting me use the camp grill the night before! Of course, much
thanks to Mr. Iljin for bringing the food, and although he was unable to attend,
thanks to Victor for buying the food. Kudos also to all who brought generators to
help charge up everyone’s batteries.
Much thanks to Shelley for shuttling me around the campsite with my fishing rod
sticking out the window, and to Mike Carpenter and Eddie Car for conducting the
weigh in. And Ralph, thanks again for letting me hitch a ride this year!
Finally, Marcia wanted me add this too: “to those who stayed and helped Linda and I
take down our tent in that terrible wind: we really appreciate you guys helping out
as the winds were so bad that we couldn’t handle it alone. We understand that
everyone is in a hurry to get home as we were also. Thank you to Ralph, Terry,
Mike Munson and David Eberle for staying and helping us out. Also a big thanks to
Terry and Shelly for camping down in no man’s land with us, as we did feel a little
safer. Thanks again for the help you gave us guys.”
Next meeting and tournament
A huge thanks to Dan Warme for the great talk that he gave at the last meeting.
Big fish specialist Matt Newman will be the speaker at our next meeting. Our next
tournament is at Castaic on June 17th with a non-boater fee of $25.
Night tournament BBQ’s
Thank so much to all of those members who helped out with the last night
tournament BBQ. This includes Ralph, Mike Munson, Karl, the Editor, and Richard
Cook and Wife.
Our next BBQ will be on Friday night, June 22nd, starting at 5PM.. I will be out of
town and unable to attend so please do your best to come out and help with this
fundraiser.
