THE COLOSSAL CLASH AT CACHUMA

A great time was had by all at Lake Cachuma the weekend of August 16th and 17th. Where were you? No excuse. Let’s get our priorities straight. Do you want health, wealth and happiness or do you want to fish?

Mark Poulson went up to Cachuma in the middle of the week to see if he could get the lay of the lake. Remember to ask Ron about sleeping in a tent in a thunderstorm.

Dinner Friday night was our usual stately affair. A lively, polite and open political discussion between well mannered and knowledgeable individuals followed dinner. The origins of the universe was the next logical topic of discussion.

5:00 Saturday morning arrived right on time. We were all excited to get onto the water and start fishing. We were still pretty excited when they finally opened the gates at 6:30. You could not have asked for better weather as long as you don’t want cloud cover because there wasn’t any. The water temperature was 77° and the air temperature was in the 80 degree range during the hottest part of the day. This of course translates to tough conditions and so the size limit was dropped to 12”. There have been some discussions to drop the size limits for Cachuma altogether and to bringing a postage scale to tournament.

Well as I said, day one of the tournament started and finished. At the end of the day Mike Carpenter and Eddie Carr were in first place with a limit of 5 fish. Mike was the big producer in the boat on day 1. I can’t tell you what they used, it’s a secret. Following Mike and Eddie in second place were Mike Munson and Kevin “the future Bassmaster’s Champion” Merry. They had a 3 fish total for the day. Close behind them was Roger Larocque and Larry Wild with 2 fish. Mike Iljin and partner John Chapman with 1 and my partner Ron Licari and I with 1 fish completed the days catch. Nice job gentlemen. Does the word “skunked” mean anything to you? It does to Mark Poulson and his Guest Dan Scanlon.

Dinner on Saturday evening was great in large part to Ron’s amazing grilling skills. Hamburgers were coming off the 12” Weber in record time. Nobody had to wait for food. After getting several dozen burgers done Ron beer boiled, grilled and then re-boiled some brauts. Ken Rideout and Cindy Stephan, mother of Kevin “FLW Rookie of the Year 2012” Merry, cooked up a load of freshly picked corn on the cob to go with the burgers and brauts. A huge thank you to all of you. You deserve a Laurel and a hardy handshake for your efforts.

Everything changed at the start of day two. Okay, not everything, the bite was still very tough. When we launched a thick fog was blowing in across the lake from the dam. If you have never done it, running full throttle on the water with 10 foot visibility is very exciting. In the same way that things that lead up to a heart attack are often very exciting. The fog cleared in about an hour and once again we had fantastic fishing weather. We could have done with some cloud cover again but the temperature was fine.

The final results changed as well. At the end of the second day of fishing Mike Carpenter and Eddie Carr were still in front with 9 fish with at total weight of 10.21 lbs. This time Eddie did most of the catching and Michael did the netting.

Second was Ron Licari and Shelley Singer with 4 for the day, a total of 5 at 6.85 lbs. Ron caught one on a spinner and I caught our big fish on a white fluke fished very close to the bank. Almost all of the rest came on drop shot Oxblood 6” Roboworms .

Mark Poulson and Dan Scanlon more than made up for their first day 0 with 3 fish weighing a nice 5.57 lbs. They captured the big fish of the tournament at 2.93 lbs. Mark says that they caught all of their fish drop shotting a 4” Roboworm with a Chartreuse tail.

Mike Munson and Kevin “remember your humble beginnings” Merry got one more to add to the 3 they caught on Saturday for a four fish total of 4.25 lbs. Good job guys.

Roger and Larry also picked up a couple more fish for 4 at 4.23 lbs.

Finishing out the list was Mike Iljin and John C. They got one more into the boat and finished with a total of 3.36 lbs. Mike caught their big fish on Saturday using a Texas rigged 6” roboworm. Mike said that on Sunday they must have caught every dink in the lake throwing back about 25 fish mostly caught on a deep running crankbait in Lime green with an orange stripe.

Our next meeting is on Thursday September 11th at El Torito. Team Davies, father and son Steve and DeLynn Davies, will speak at our meeting on Thursday. The Challenge event is the following Sunday September 14th at Castaic. There has been a lot of good feedback from other clubs so it looks like it is going to be an outstanding event. Hope to see you there.
