Let’s talk tournament fishing. Let’s talk about a Challenge event. Let’s talk about the first annual Manny Nunez Memorial Club Challenge. That’s a lot of words for one event but Manny was a lot of man. Six clubs and 38 boats, the biggest and best tournament yet. Of course we are talking also about Castaic Lake in September, warm water (74°-78°), beautiful blue skies (around 85°), awful fishing conditions. Well not for all. If you got on a boil, you were on fish, otherwise you struggled.
Leading the way at the weigh in was the team of Jeff Jue and David Sanchez of the Castaic Bass Club with the Big Bag for the tournament at 11.72 pounds. Steve Rowe and John Chapman also with Castaic Bass Club came to the scales with a nice bag weighing 11.01 pounds and the number 3 big fish at 3.66 pounds. Big Fish went to Kevin Gelsinger and Richard May from the Conejo Valley Bass Club with a very nice 5.73 pounder and a total bag of 11.26 pounds. The number 2 big fish was caught by Mike Campbell and Howard Tench, Ventura County Bass Club at 3.77 pounds.
I am aware of a couple FIRST occurring during the tournament. Gary Priddy caught his very first fish on a spinnerbait. He was hard cranking a 1⁄2 oz. Chartreuse and White deep and hook a small one. It didn’t make it to the scale but it still counts as a first. Shelley Singer (that’s me) caught his first ever Crankbait fish. Using a Rattle’n Rapala in an orange shape that is about 14 years old and never been in the water before. I hooked a fish that was easily one of the biggest I have ever caught ocean or lake and landed a Striper that weight about 6 1⁄2 pounds.
Mike Iljin and Nick Langer were having a very tough day. They got slapped and short struck a lot but couldn’t put one in the boat. At last they got on a boil that looked like it would produce and it did, a double. Mike and Nick were both trying to fight their fish and get the net at the same time. In the end Mike’s 3+ pounder spit the hook but they netted Nick’s 1.26.
On a more serious note, Mark Nunez, son of Manny Nunez was there at the Bar-B-Que with several members of the family to show their appreciation for our having named the challenge event in honor of his dad. I know I speak for the club when I say we were the ones who were honored.
Speaking of the Bar-B-Que, hamburger flipping duties went to Eddie Carr who had some big shoes to fill after Ron Licari’s performance at Cachuma last month. I’m not sure but I think that without the help of Grant Powell, Eddie might have been in trouble on this one. A huge Thank You to all of our sponsors and others who donated items to the raffle. We also want to thank the members of the Bass’n Buddies, 911 Bass, South Orange County Bass, Conejo Valley Bass and Ventura County Bass Clubs. Without you it would simply not be an inter-club tournament and it sure would not be near as much fun. We hope to see a lot more of you next year.
A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT
For all of you who are interested, especially the new members, we are putting together an order for club jackets. The cost is $85 and we try to order these only once a year. We also have a lot of logowear on hand, sweats, teeshirts, etc. Please let Mike Iljin know as soon as possible.
See you at the meeting at El Torito on Thursday night October 9th at 7:00 or at the tournament at Lake Pyrimid on the 12th.
