Castaic Bass Club Newsletter
January 2009

January Meeting or What you missed because you were watching football

You actually missed some very important stuff this time. The new roster of officers for 2009 was announced. Mike Iljin continues as our President. Bo Viescas is the Vice President and Tournament Director. Eddie Carr returns as the Assistant to the President. Mark Poulson is going to be the Club Secretary and Mike Carpenter will be the Weight Master. Shelley Singer, (that’s me) will continue as the Treasurer and will also publish the monthly newsletter.
The club also adopted a couple of rule changes that Mike will go into in more detail in a separate article. Among these changes, the rule governing Throw Away or 0 tournament points as been relaxed because of the number of members that are not able to attend the two day tournaments held out of town.
We were fortunate to have a wonderful guest speaker for the meeting. Gary Ballesteros talked about Winter Patterns and specifically tips for catching fish at Castaic during the cold weather. The number one thing he stressed is that these fish see the same baits week in and week out. Find something different to throw. The proof of his word showed in the tournament results where 9 of the 10 boats had fish to weigh at the end of the day.

New Members or There we grow again

Welcome Jason Haustad of Simi Valley and George Reed of Glendale. Both jointed at the January meeting and also both fished in the tournament. Jason teamed up with Mike Lander and finished in the money. A couple other new members that joined late last year are Wes and Justin Carpenter from Fillmore.

Tournament Results or How I spend my second Sundays

It was a dark and stormy night. A beagle sits atop his doghouse typing. Okay, it was neither dark nor stormy and as far as I know beagles can’t type much less sit atop their doghouses, I just always wanted to start something that way. It was cold but then again it was January. The conditions were tough but given the pressure on Castaic Lake, that is nothing new either. Due to the new rules governing tournament fishing at Castaic the limits have been dropped to 4 fish. Mike Carpenter and Nick Langer caught 4 fish and weighed in a great total of 13.22 pounds. Finishing second were Ralph Rosas and Kevin (I have more fishing rods than KVD) Merry with 3 fish that included Ralph’s tournament Big Fish that weighed 4.45 pounds. In third place were Mike Lander and our new member Jason Haustad with another 4 fish limit. There were a total of 25 fish caught on just another one of those tough Castaic Lake Sundays.

The Name this Newsletter Contest or stop me before I name it myself

Castaic Bass Club Newsletter is what this is but it is not a very catchy title. As Editor in Chief, I am announcing the first ever, never to happen again, Name the Newsletter contest. The winner will receive written recognition in this very prestigious world renowned periodical for submitting the best name as selected by our illustrious panel of judges yet to be chosen. Maybe we could vote on it. Send your picks to me at eyecooktoo@yahoo.com. The contest ends February something or other before I publish the next newsletter.
