April Tournament Report

Dateline: April 17th, Lake Piru

16 boats from the Castaic Bass Club showed up at a full to the brim Lake Piru to test the lakes waters in search of those elusive bass. Our tournament had originally been scheduled for Lake Pyramid but with the recent oil spill at that reservoir, we had to move our event 15 miles
downstream to Piru.

Our largest field in club history launched to some very tough fishing conditions, bluebird skies with a bit of wind coming up in the afternoon. Nevertheless, someone always find the fish, and on this morning, it was Mike Lander and son who topped the field. Mike had reported a very tough bite the day before at the WON BASS Cachuma event, but made up for it on this day by winning the event by catching three bass for 10.81lbs, topped off by the 7.31lb event big fish. Mike wanted to thanks his sponsors, including Skeeter Boats, Maxima Line, St Croix Rods, and Team Davies Tackle Company. Way to go Mike!

Taking second on this day were Mike Forslund and Marcia Thompson with another three fish sack, this one weighing 9.72lbs, including a 4.22lb big fish. I believe that at least one of their fish was a “sight fish.” Great going guys (and gal)!

Taking third was the team of Mike Carpenter and Linda Taylor Bell. Their sack totaled 7.92lbs for four fish. Mike expressed surprise after the tournament that more sight fish were not available, but with the lake much fuller than the last couple of years, it appears that the fish have
really spread out and are very hard to find.

Taking fourth was Ron Licari and the author with three fish weighing 6.58 lbs. We started out the morning getting a ton of snags while drop shotting in Reasoners Cove, just outside the launch ramp. It was then that we switched to weightless and weedless senkos, and we found three fish that took a liking to our baits. I want to thank Ron for a great day on the water.

Worthy of mention was the team of Brendon O’Dell and Clyde Crow who took fifth place with three fish weighing 4.93lbs. This was Brendon’s 1st tournament with our club and Clyde’s incredible knowledge of Piru helped them to their high finish!

A big thanks to Larry and J.D. who hosted a hot dog and hot link cookout right in the parking lot after the tournament. Thanks a bunch guys! Our next tournament will be a two day affair at Cachuma May 14th and 15th. A group site with room for 13 rigs and hookups has been reserved and we hope to see a big group show up!
