CBC Winning Team Lino Bassi of SOCB Catches Monster of the day 7.44

A total of seven clubs consisting of 59 members gathered at Lake Castaic for the Castaic Bass Club’s 12 annual club Challenge event. These club included South Orange County Bassmasters, West Valley Bassmasters, Conejo Valley Bass Club, Guys and Gals Bass Club, Ambassadors Bass Club, 911 Bass Club, and the host Castaic Bass Club. Things got off to a great start the night before with an all you could eat tri tip BBQ. Members of several clubs elected to stay the night in the parking lot and discuss stategy for the next days fishing.

The next morning everyone gathered to see who they would be paired up with. It was determined that the smallest contingent was three members from both the 911 and Ambassadors Bass Club with three attending members each , so the top three weights from each club would count toward winning the Sun Country Marine Trophy.

Blast-off was just after 6am with weigh in time set for 2pm. As the weigh in and BBQ started there were fish stories galore, stories of lost fish, with plenty of joking and laughter going around. There were many four fish limits weighed in but none better than that of Brendon O’Dell of Castaic Bass with a limit of 15.71lbs. Great job Brendon!

Then the anticipation started on who would take big fish honors. But for me there was no question on who would take that honor. I had a great day on the water with Lino Bassi of SOCB. We both took four fish limits to the scales. But one of his fish was huge. At about 9am, Lino threw out a 4" senko on a wacky rig, and proceeded to set the hook on a 7.44lb hawg! Great job Lino!

A huge raffle was held shortly after weigh in and then the totals were read off to see who the winning club would be. As it turned out the host Castaic Club won the event with a three member total weight of 37.06lbs, just beating out SOCB with 33.23lbs. Some people may have seemed a bit surprised that a club from way down south could challenge in this event but it showed how may great sticks SOCB has. Great job guys!

I want to thanks all of our sponsors who donated product for this event. These include Val White at Action Tackle, Sal Vallone at Bob Sands, Steve Gallion of Gallion’s Corner Market, Mike Brakebill of Roboworm, Amir at Lakeside Marine, Ron Licari and Pepsi for the drinks they donated for this event, and especially Grant Powell of Sun Country Marine Castaic.

I also want to thanks the staff that helped put on the event. Larry Wild, Ron Licari, JD Dorsey and Michael Stern did an outstanding job with sign-ups and the weigh in. Mark O’Borsky, JD, and Ron also did a great job running the BBQ. Thanks to Larry for bringing that great tri tip for Saturday night! And a huge thanks to all of those clubs that participated. We hope to see all of you out there next year!
